Story The woodpecker and the toucan (Read and Listen)

Story The woodpecker and the toucan: adaptation of the legend of the Amazon.

Many years ago, in the Amazon jungle, there lived a little woodpecker who was going to be a father.

The days had passed quickly and their babies were about to be born. She needed to make a nest in a safe place, away from predators; For this reason, he chose the upper part of a century-old trunk, far from prying eyes.

Since she didn’t have much time, she spent day and night relentlessly pecking at the bark of the tree. She had to make a large, comfortable hole for the eggs!

The sound of its beak hitting the wood spread throughout the surrounding area and caught the attention of a toucan. At first, the colorful bird couldn’t find where that chiming was coming from, but he investigated a little and discovered the woodpecker working, hidden by the foliage of the trees.

– Hi, friend! I see you are making a nest for your family.

– Yes that’s how it is. I have to finish it as soon as possible because my little ones will come into the world any moment now.

The toucan was fascinated. He had never seen anyone work with so much interest and he decided to make him a proposition.

– Know? I don’t have a house and I am forced to nest outdoors and anywhere. I never feel safe and I get quite cold. I was wondering if I could count on you to make a nest for me.

The woodpecker stopped chopping the wood for a moment and looked at him with great interest. His eyes fell on the chest of the toucan, a truly beautiful and colorful bird.

– I have an idea! If it’s okay with you, I promise to make your nest and in exchange, you give me some of your beautiful red feathers. I think they would be the perfect decoration for my head!

– Fantastic! It’s a fair deal for both of us. Count on it!

As soon as the woodpecker finished building its nest, it began to drill another hole in a neighboring tree for the toucan. At the end of the work, the toucan congratulated him on his good work, removed a few feathers, and placed them on his new friend’s head. Afterwards, the two flew to a pond that the morning rains had formed. The woodpecker leaned down a little to look at himself and found himself very handsome.

– Oh, how good they look on me! Thank you very much, friend. They are beautiful!

– Thanks to you for building my new home.

They hugged each other and a lifelong friendship was created between them.

Legend has it that, from that day on, woodpeckers proudly wear a nice tuft of feathers and that toucans always find holes to live in, because their friends the woodpeckers give them holes so they can take shelter and nest.
