Rook Definition

A tower is defined as any construction made artificially by humans and which is characterized by having enough height to stand out from the rest of the buildings. A tower can be located individually but it can also be part of a complex of buildings and constructions, in which case it is vital that its height is higher than the rest in order to stand out. Depending on the area, the urban design of the place, the material with which it was made and the climatic conditions of the place, a tower can be hundreds of meters high.

The towers can be very varied and diverse in terms of materials, design, height, structure, shape and purpose of their construction. Normally, when one thinks of a tower, the first images that come to mind are those of the famous medieval towers that were part of large castles and that stood out from the total building due to its height. In medieval times, the tower was used as a zone of control and supervision over the region or also as an imprisonment space for criminals or traitors. The medieval towers were characterized by being made of stone, being quite wide, cylindrical and with very few windows, which made them deeply dark and gloomy.

Today, the notion of a tower is applied to many different constructions, even those that involve great modernism in their design. An apartment tower or a communications tower are undoubtedly typical constructions of our time that have little or nothing to do with those medieval towers beyond their significant height. At the same time, other constructions such as bell towers, lighthouses, viewpoints, and skyscrapers can be considered towers.

Among the most famous towers in the world we must mention the Tower of Pisa (the famous leaning tower), the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Tower of London, the CN Tower in Toronto, the Himalayan Towers and the now defunct Twin Towers of NY.
