When we talk about oratory we are talking about the art of the word, about how a person is capable of transmitting a message by speaking, communicating to an audience, a group of people or an individual. The key is in the sender’s ability to convince a receiver.
In oratory, the final claim is to tell a story, exalt or motivate an audience, transmitting a message, etc. The important thing about this is the ability of the speaker to convey what he is talking about. For this, there are several elements that are essential for what is said to reach the public.
On the one hand, the knowledge that the person has on the subject or message that is to be transmitted is important. You have to think that oratory already comes from the Greek tradition and that it was studied, worked on and put into practice by true scholars in the field, who in most cases were politicians, philosophers, etc. Moreover, mastering this art was a reason for prestige in society in the society of that time.
But focusing on the subject, the oratory technique is based on certain types of techniques so that the audience focuses attention on the person who is speaking. On the one hand, the speaker has to convey his message always using the second person, which makes the listener feel closer to the speaker.
On the other hand, another of the elements that is widely used are set phrases, which make the person feel more identified not only with the speaker, but also with what is said, associating it with popular culture, very important in any society. . To this we must also add that the speaker must use a good tone of voice, modulate it intelligently, etc., that is, use all the resources provided by language, linguistics and diction.
Likewise, the audience, its public and, above all, people as unique individuals must always be taken into account. This is important since, on many occasions in the speech, a specific person will be addressed to ask rhetorical questions, calls for attention, winks, etc., which will keep the viewer’s attention.
Oratory, as we said before, the art of the word, has the power that the message to be transmitted does not always have to be true. The important thing is that the message that is transmitted is credible to the audience that listens to it and that it is convinced.
