Muse Definition

At the behest of the Greek mythology and according to the belief of the oldest authors of this culture, the muses were goddesses who triggered the inspiration of music and also did the same but presiding over the sciences and other arts.

Greek mythology: goddesses who inspired music, arts and sciences

Regarding the origins of these goddesses there are various proposals, some indicate that they were daughters of the god of gods, the great Zeus, and the goddess of memory Mnemosyne.

Those who support this theory also say that they were born in Pieriaat the foot of one of the most outstanding mountains such as the of Olympus.

Meanwhile, there are other positions that saddle their origin to Uranus, god of the sky, and Gaea, goddess of the earth.

Nine Greek muses and their functions

Theories more or less about its origin, in the aforementioned mythology nine muses were established: calliope (inspired epic poetry and eloquence), clio (takes care to illuminate the story), Erato (she brought her inspiring air to the amatory music), euterpe (he was an inspiring source of music, especially flute playing), Melpomene (she was the exclusive goddess of tragedy), polyhymnia (it was dedicated to sacred poetry and songs of a sacred type), Talia (he put all his inspiration in bucolic poetry and comedy), terpsichore (he was in charge of illuminating both dance and choral poetry) and Urania (She was busy inspiring the exact sciences, astronomy and didactic poetry).

In the known as homeric poetrythe muses held a special presence and were presented as goddesses of music and poetry.

Among their most common activities were those of interpreting songs at mealtime of the gods and at funerals they were in charge of singing laments.

In addition, they were attributed the very important function of placing in the minds of the poets the events that they would later tell through their verses, that is, they inspired their stories and without them there would be no stories.

Woman or thing that awakens inspiration in an artist

In Greece, then, the muses were attributed a supernatural power because the artists summoned them to be able to create their works, while today the muse is that woman, or particular matter, that awakens the passion of the artist and that encourages you to create a work that will be especially charged with feelings and emotions.

Many artists of yesterday and today have confessed to the entire world that a large part of their unforgettable creations are the result of the inspiration that a very special muse awoke in them and that led them to carry out this or that work.

Plastic artists, music composers, filmmakers, and writers are some of the many professionals who often use muses to activate their power of creation.

And in how many of these the influence of the muses has been decisive for the creation or not, because it is known that the absence of their muses has complicated their creative task, especially in those cases in which the creative process has been closely associated with a particular muse.

But let’s talk about specific and emblematic cases that went down in posterity.

Gala has been the muse par excellence of the enormous painter Salvador Dalí, who has portrayed her on countless occasions.

In addition to his wife, Gala Dalí, she served as an inspiration for her husband who, just looking at her, was phenomenally inspired.

Catherine Deneuve, beautiful and talented French actress, knew how to be the muse of director Luis Buñuel.

Cinema has been able to form many societies of this type, muses that become inseparable from artists.

In music, of any genre, the muses have also been and are very popular, and the source of inspiration that artists need to create unforgettable lyrics and music, Mick Jagger has had them in many of his women, the great John Lennon in Yoko Ono, or Bob Dylan also in several of his wives…

In most cases, this muse-creator relationship is motivated by love and physical attraction, two powerful feelings that have been able to unleash the creation of the most sensitive souls in this regard.
