Meaning of Military Power (What it is, Concept and Definition)

What is Military Power:

The military power of a State or nation indicates the level of development of its defense and war technology compared to that of other countries. Military power is generally divided into four forces: the air forces, the navy, the naval forces and the number of tanks.

The military power of a country is calculated with a formula with more than 55 factors defined by the GFP (Global Firepower or ‘global firepower’ in Spanish).

Among them are the flow of resources, quantity and technology of equipment, the number of troops, financial and political stability, the population of each State, among others.

Characteristics of military power

In the GFP database, there are 136 countries and the position in the global ranking table takes into account the following considerations.

Weapon Diversity

The diversity of weapons is more relevant than the total number of weapons available.

nuclear power

The nuclear power of each country is not taken into account. Despite this, if there is suspicion of such power, the GFP applies a bonus for said State.

Relative status

The calculation of military power takes into consideration the First World, Second World or Third World status of each country.

Influencing factors

The geographical characteristics, logistical flexibility, existing natural resources and local industry of each country are called influencing factors.

Availability of troops

The total availability of personnel is key, since it influences the availability of human resources and the industry.

naval power

Landlocked nations are not penalized for lack of naval power. Those with access are penalized for the lack of diversity in their ranks.

Military alliances

NATO allies receive an additional bonus because, in theory, they share weapons resources among themselves.

Socioeconomic stability

The stability financial situation and public health are taken into consideration.

International leadership

The current political and military leadership are not factors taken into consideration in the formula that determines position on the global league table of military power.

Ranking world military power

The world power leaderboard is calculated by the Power Index (PwrIndx) or ‘power index’ in Spanish, defined by the GFP.

Below, the first three places in world military power are found in the classification table, divided in turn by the position in air, navy, naval forces and number of tanks.
