Difference between HD, Full HD, Ultra HD, 4K, 8K and other screen resolutions

The resolution refers to the number of pixels that a screen is capable of offering and it is measured by multiplying the pixels across the width and height of the image. As a general rule, the higher the number of pixels, the higher the resolution.

In the field of digital television, specifically high-definition television, the acronym HD refer to the resolution of a screen that has 1280×720 pixels, also known as 720p.

Among the most popular screen resolutions are those with a resolution Full HD or of 1920×1080 pixels. This resolution is also called 1080p.

The denomination Ultra HD describes those screens with a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels. These screens are usually promoted with the description “4K”, for having almost 4000 pixels across it, despite the fact that this name is not the most appropriate.

The resolution 4Kknown as DCI 4Kis a format used originally and mainly in film production and in movie screens. These screens have a resolution of 4096×2160 pixels.

What is resolution?

The resolution of a screen refers to the level of definition offered by television, computer or mobile screens, as well as projectors. This is measured based on the number of pixels that the screen has width and height. For example, a high definition or HD resolution screen is 1280 x 720 pixels.

Resolution and number of pixels

A pixel is the minimum or basic unit with which a color is represented on a screen. That is, a pixel is each one of the “squares” that can be observed when an image is amplified.

Now, the resolution of a screen is expressed in pixels, which are presented as the number of pixels across the width and height of the screen. As a general rule, how much the higher the resolution that has a screen (number of pixels), greater is its definition.

Thus, in two screens with the same size, but with different resolutions, the one with the higher resolution will have more pixels and the screen with the lower resolution will have fewer pixels.

In addition, to know the resolution of a screen, the horizontal lines that it has are counted. Each horizontal line represents the measurement of one pixel high. For example, a 1280 x 720 screen has 720 horizontal lines.

Interlaced scan and progressive scan

The sweep, scan or progressive scan (progressive scanning) refers to the presentation on the screen of a complete image that is not separated into different frames. The letter “p” is used to identify if a resolution has progressive scan, together with the description of its size. For example, a 1080p resolution has a progressive scan.

In this case, progressive scan means that each horizontal line is scanned in sequence. Thus, the screen projects one by one the lines from top to bottom in order and the image they form corresponds to a frame.

refresh rate of a screen (refresh rate) refers to the number of frames that a screen is capable of displaying in one second. This frequency is measured in hertz (hertz) or cycles per second.

A screen capable of updating 120 frames per second, is a screen that has a refresh rate of 120 Hz. In the same way, if a screen has a frequency of 60 Hz, the refresh rate of this screen is less than that of a 120hz one.

The speed with which screens refresh images is related to screen resolution, since the higher the refresh rate, the sharper and smoother the video will look.

Resolution, screen size and viewing distance

Both the size of a screen and the distance from which the content displayed on it is viewed are key elements that influence the way a given resolution is appreciated. The size of television screens and monitors is measured according to the diagonal length of the screens. If a television has a 14-inch screen, this means that there are 14 inches diagonally from one corner of the screen to the other.

What is HD?
