The word brother is the term that allows us to designate that individual who integrates a brotherhood.

while for brotherhood is called that association, congregation, whether public or private, in which individuals who profess the Catholic religion gather to express their devotion around a prominent figure of the belief. It is governed based on what is established in the fees corresponding to Title V, at the request of the Code of Canon Law.

It should be noted that the aforementioned Code of Canon Law is the mother norm that contains all the norms that deal with regulating the organization of the Catholic Churchamong them: the ecclesiastical hierarchies, the obligations and rights to which the faithful are subject, the sacraments and the punishments that are established for the non-observance of any of the norms.

There are three types of brotherhoods: penitential (they are those who perform a public penance during Holy Week), sacramentals (the worship of the Blessed Sacrament is proposed as a primary purpose), and of glory (This is the name given to the brotherhoods that do not qualify to integrate the two previous types and that generally promote worship around a saint).

It is customary for this type of religious organization to organize a procession annually.

The most outstanding organ of the brotherhoods is the general council on which falls the responsibility for the election of the board of officials that make up the government and that will have the mission of directing the brotherhood. Regarding the members, it is common for many of them to have different benefits, responsibilities and rights.

Although any practicing Christian can join a brotherhood, it is a sine quanom condition of the majority to have the recommendation of a member. Once the faithful is accepted, he will participate in an act in which he swears the rules and promises not only to provide fidelity but also absolute service to the brotherhood in question.
